Partnerships

The National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) is a federally funded Australian partnership committed to providing peak and specialised advanced computing facilities for the Australian research community. This initiative continues a component of the Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing (APAC) which concluded in 2007.

The National Facility (NCI-NF) provides the national peak computing facility which is managed by the Australian National University Supercomputing Facility.

Specialised facilities (NCI-SF) provide services in application specific areas and complement the National Facility. Two facilities are currently available:

• Specialised Facility in Bioinformatics, hosted by the University of Queensland.
• MASSIVE - Specialised Facility in Imaging and Visualisation, hosted by by Monash University.

CSIRO is a partner in both the NCI National Facility and the Specialised Facilities.

The High Performance Computing and Communications Centre (HPCCC) is a collaboration of the Bureau of Meteorology (the Bureau) and CSIRO.

The facility was founded in 1997 to provide economies of scale for the acquisition and operations of high performance and supercomputing equipment to serve both organisations. The Centre is jointly staffed from the Bureau and CSIRO, and is co-located with the Bureau Head Office at the Docklands in Melbourne.

The HPCCC supercomputing and high performance computing centre is integrated into the Bureau of Meteorology central computing facility, with gateways from CSIRO's national network.

ASC staff are also located at the Bureau of Meteorology's Docklands facility at 700 Collins Street in Melbourne, Victoria.

CSIRO is a partner in iVEC. Acting as the hub of advanced computing in Western Australia, iVEC is encouraging and energising research in and the uptake of high performance computing and visualisation in Western Australia. This is achieved by making available facilities and expertise to the research, education and industrial communities. Application areas include nanotechnology, radioastronomy, high energy physics, medical and mining training, medical research, mining and petroleum, architecture and construction, multimedia, and urban planning.

CSIRO is a partner in TPAC (Tasmanian Partnership of Advanced Computing). TPAC is part of the Australian network of advanced computing facilities, and is a member of the Australian Research Collaboration Service (ARCS) who aim to provide long-term eResearch support services for the Australian research community with a particular focus on interoperability and collaboration infrastructure, tools, services and support.

CSIRO is a member of the Australian Research Collaboration Service (ARCS). CSIRO researchers can access the ARCS Compute and Data Grid via a grid gateway which ASC maintains. There are similar gateways in the other partners including NCI-NF, iVEC and TPAC for integrating partner resources in the ARCS grid.
